Changes I'd like to make to my study programme: FCEI and Journalism
Hi everybody! Today I'm going to write about my study programme (I'm in my second year in Journalism).
In the first year, the classes were very theoretical and there was a low practical focus. I'd like that in a career like Journalism, the students could experience from the beginning what real journalism is, like going out on the streets, reporting, interviewing, going to p
ress conferences and other things like that.
Also, as a personal opinion, I consider that several "basic training" courses (classes that are given for both faculty careers), aren't equally beneficial for Journalism and Film, I think the contents are very general and don't relate much to what each one needs to know and learn. In Journalism we have a Radio course, but I would like to have a specific course to learn how to speak well and manage the tone of voice.
Personally, I consider that the workload is fine, I'm a very active person but I have problems to organize my time and many times I have accumulated work, even so I feel that the workload it's fine and leaves me free time in my daily life to go out with my friends and rest. I consider that the length od studies it's adequate, it's 5 years with internships and practice so I'm OK with that.
Regarding the facilities of the faculty, there are many things to fix. Our School of Journalism is old so the infrastructure isn't modern like the new building of the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities, but there are several sectors that are in a bad condition, a part of the roof is broken and some time ago, a classroom was flooded. As journalism students, we need to have electricity to use the recording equipment, to work on the Radio and to access the WiFi, and it's very common that the power is cut at FCEI and we can't work. It's a very complicated situation that is constantly repeated.
About the use of technology, there are some problems too. For example, the radio equipment is of very good quality but there are few recording islands, so we have to reserve hours to work there and other students have to wait for availability and that slows down our progress and work. For us, the time is important and many times, it's difficult to respect the deadlines of some jobs because of coordination and time issues.
Finally, I would like to use this blog to talk about the teaching method. I don't know how the curriculum is organized among the teachers, but the educational methods aren't the same for everyone, each teacher has a different teaching method. My radio classes aren't the same as the radio classes in the other section, and that makes a difference and irregular progress between the students. Many times we've had to learn how to use the equipment (cameras, microphones, audiovisual and audio editing) on our own, instead of learning in class with the teacher, I would like them to teach us what is and how to use each part of the equipment to know completely what each button or each action means, those are some of the aspects that I would like to change in my study program.

Hi Antonia, I totally agree with what you think about basic training!
